As the festive season approaches, bring some joy to children and families that can’t afford to buy toys at Christmas in Broadgate’s neighbouring boroughs by donating a gift at one of our receptions.
East London has some of the worst levels of child poverty in the UK. In Tower Hamlets alone more than 50% of children live below the poverty line.
Every year, ELBA’s Toy Appeal distributes toys amongst community organisations working with children in Newham, Hackney and Tower Hamlets and Broadgate is committed to helping the appeal however possible, as a proud member of ELBA. In 2014, Broadgate delivered 33 sacks of toys and gifts and over £2,500 in donations and vouchers.
With Christmas well on its way, we are once more taking donations for new, unwrapped toys to the value of around £12. If you don’t have time to buy a gift that is not a problem, as you can purchase a toy online from Broadgate’s John Lewis Gift List here using the code 690347 (password: festive) until Friday 25th November.
Toy collection points will be in the following Broadgate receptions from Friday 18th November till Friday 2nd December 2016:
- One Broadgate
- 155 Bishopsgate
- 199 Bishopsgate
- 201 Bishopsgate
- Broadgate Tower
- Broadwalk House
- Exchange House
- 10 Exchange Square
ELBA will collect all toys donated at Broadgate and distribute to more than 60 community organisations, schools and NHS trusts.
Toys aimed at children from newborn to 16 years are needed. Past appeals have identified that gifts for the very young (0-12 months) and older teenagers (14-16 years) are in short supply. Please bear in mind that some children might have disabilities, so colourful toys for those with hearing problems and noisy ones for those with visual impairments are always welcome.
Toy donation criteria:
1. Toys with the Lion Mark CE to show they are child friendly and safe for use.
2. Toys with an educational/play value for the child.
3. No battery operated toys.
4. No war toys or toys that portray fighting.

Feedback from last year’s Appeal:
St Hilda's East Women's Project
"None of the children from the centre would receive presents if it wasn't for the ELBA Toy Appeal. It was amazing to see the children's faces light up when they received their toys; I can honestly say that they all loved them!"
Oliver Thomas Children’s Centre
"The ELBA Toy Appeal enabled us to donate toys to the families most in need and provide a bit of Christmas magic for their children. As the toys provided covered a wide age range, we were able to provide gifts for the whole family and not just the youngest children therefore supporting the family as a whole at Christmas."
