William Tillyer

Turning 80 in 2018, William Tillyer is a sculptor, painter, printmaker and ceramicist. Studying at Middlesbrough College of Art (“I was lucky in that I grew up at a time when every town had a decent art college”) and at the Slade School of Art in London.

During the 1950s, he received a print scholarship to study at the famous Atelier 17 in Paris. 

On his return to the UK, he spent several years teaching at art institutions before accepting an appointment as Artist in Residence at Melbourne University in Australia during the early 1980s and was nominated for the Jerwood Prize in 1998. In 2013, Mechanics Institute II was included in a major retrospective of Tillyer's work staged by mima in Middlesbrough.

In 2018, the Bernard Jacobson Gallery are staging five exhibitions by the artist to mark his 80th year.
