London’s best places to eat this Veganuary

2020 is set to be the year vegan eating goes mainstream – it’s projected that 2.9 million people in Britain will be vegan by the end of this year. So the question is: as Veganuary arrives this month where are the best places to find inspired, tasty menus and food? We’ve got the best 7 places to try now near Liverpool Street and central London. 

1. The ultimate vegan pizza at Franco Manca

Each month, Franco Manca creates a special pizza and inspired by Veganuary, they’ll be launching the new no 7 vegan pizza on 7th January. With wild mushrooms, Kalamata black olives, fresh baby kale, three-chilli mix, vegan cheese and a lightly spiced butternut squash base, this is one of the tastiest pizzas you’ll ever try. 

Plus, they’re also launching a new loyalty app: buy six pizzas and the seventh is on the house. New users to the app receive a stamp when they download the app for the first time, and customers can also earn a stamp when they recommend a friend and the friend buys a pizza. 2. A welcoming detox bowl at Island Poké

Smoked tofu on noodle slaw with tahini ginger dressing, marinated golden beets, sesame broccoli and topped with a super seed mix (£8.85). Everything you could want from a bowl of vegan goodness – plus it’s part of Island Poke’s breakfast menu which means you can get your day off to flavour-filled, healthy start. 

Insider’s view: “Best poké in London. Prices are very reasonable and the fish and sushi rice taste fresh. They also allow you to adjust some of their set menus slightly which is very nice. Portions are also very healthy. Highly recommend this place.” Google Reviews

3. Really good plates at Liverpool Street Grind

One of the best vegan menus in town comes courtesy of Grind. Cosy up by the counter or relax under the neon lights to savour breakfast in the form of overnight oats complete with coconut, strawberry, brittle or Coconut porridge, sourcherry, almond (both £6) while plates such as asparagus, scrambled eggs, feta, chilli, tortilla (£8) can be changed to vegan on request. Sharing plates include smashed avocado, alfalfa sprouts, chilli, taro chips or pak choi, aubergine, courgette, sesame, soy dressing (both £6).

Insider’s view: “I went for some after-work drinks not knowing what to expect and the drinks were great but the staff made the whole experience. The whole team were fab, especially Charlotte!” TripAdvisor

4. A Vegenuary menu and cheeky gin brunch at Mrs Fogg’s

With a special vegan menu featuring chargrilled naan bread, smokey aubergine and chickpea dip; fried green tomatoes; roasted cauliflower steak; pulled jackfruit, kulcha bread and spicy carrot and split lentil fritters, Mrs Fogg’s is bringing some real love to Veganuary. For £46pp, at Mrs Fogg’s you’ll tuck into Indian-spiced mains (aubergines, chickpeas and spinach with olives and dates in tomato sauce served with a side of naan bread) and a selection of mini pastries served with yoghurt and fresh fruits served alongside incredible gin cocktails (the Red Snapper is an ode to Bloody Marys served with Bombay Sapphire gin, spice mix, tomato juice, mustard, lemon juice and salt and pepper), this is a vegan indulgence not to be missed (especially as we ease into the New Year). 
 
Insider view: “Visited Mrs Fogg’s today with my friend. We had a two-hour slot to enjoy unlimited gin and snacks. We wished we had not eaten beforehand as it was more like a three-course meal of tasty Indian food. The gins just kept coming. You have a choice of three, which is enough really.... The staff are amazing, so friendly and attentive… Never been to Broadgate Circle before, but lots of restaurants and bars there.”

5. Salads of glory at Farmer J

Head to Farmer J for their incredible vegan Fieldtrays… Made up of a base, a main, two sides and a sauce, these trays are seriously addictive. Choose from brown rice, freekah or spinach; add a main (charred tofu steaks are so good) then add anything from whole roasted cauliflower in coriander cumin, harissa, black sesame, olive oil, coriander and spring onion; roasted sweet potato with za’atar and polenta or Kale Miso Slaw with radish, sesame and miso dressing. Enjoy!

Insider’s view: “That was damn forkin’ Good! It is the first time I’m trying this place and let me tell you, I will be back. The food was prepared so tasty that I couldn’t stop eating. And a good portion too. I might not need dinner :)” Google

6. An Aussie weekend brunch at Beany Green 

Come all vegans – here’s a menu that’s dedicated to your needs as the Daisy Green collection has always led the way in vegan food. Celeriac toast, avocado, scambled tofu, broccoli and grilled tomatoes (£12.70) make for a healthy and colourful start to the day or go for the comfort of vegan coconut yogurt with vegan granola and fresh berries (£8.60). Then enjoy bottomless mimosas or prosecco… 

Insider’s view: “Really enjoyed our visit to Beany Green for brunch – we sat outside with the patio heater and enjoyed a lovely view! Had never been before, however really enjoyed the fresh food and well made drinks (would recommend the Chai Latte!). One of our party had a severe allergy, and the friendly staff couldn’t have been more accommodating with food options – thank you!”

7. Vegan ramen like no other at Shoryu Ramen

Need something to lift the spirits? Shoryu Ramen has your back with its Atsuage Fried Tofu Poké (£10) served over sushi rice and topped with avocado, tender broccoli, baby corn, edamame beans, radish, chuka wakame, kikurage mushrooms and pine nuts. It’s so delicious and so good. 

See also grilled tender broccoli with teriyaki glaze and sesame (£8) and the specially created vegan ramen which swap broth for tonyu soy milk. Choose from White Natural with  miso, konbu and shiitake broth, atsuage fried tofu, kikurage mushrooms, menma bamboo shoots, spring onion and nori seaweed (£12.90) or Spicy Vegetarian with added spicy miso sauce, tender broccoli and garlic mayu (£13.90). 

Insider’s view: “The best ramen in London in my opinion, and I've eaten a lot of ramen! It was super busy on a Friday night but the staff still managed to be super friendly and helpful. Great cocktails also.” SquareMeal
