The best vegan and veggie places to eat near Liverpool Street

With 2-3% of us embracing a vegetarian or vegan diet at any one time – and with more and more of us embracing a flexitarian approach to eating to help both our health and the planet – the best cafes and restaurants in London are creating delicious, seasonal and innovative plant- and veg-based menus.

Whether you’re searching for somewhere to eat for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner or whether you’re craving mezze, dim sum, Japanese noodles or Vietnamese street food, Broadgate’s cafes and restaurants are home to some of the best veggie and vegan plates in East London.

The best spot for veggie and vegan breakfast

Grind’s breakfast menu is filled with winning veggie dishes all of which can be made vegan on request – we recommend one-pan eggs, peppers, tomatoes, spinach, chilli and sourdough toast and also the vegan sweet potato cakes are so good. All coffee can be served with dairy alternatives too and their Super Greens juice is a vegan delight of kale, spinach, celery, romaine, cucumber, apple and lemon.

Yolk is a must-visit spot for those in need of a really good veggie or vegan breakfast menu.

Banana bread slices, Nutella brownies, egg pots, smashed avo and Miso-egg mayo brekkie baps (with miso-sriracha mayo and coriander) all rub shoulders at Yolk London. Grab the breakfast of your dreams and kick back at one of the tables and watch the world go by.

Where to go for vegan and veggie brunch

Beany Green’s brunches on the terrace overlooking Broadgate Circle are legendary and their celeriac toast, avocado, scrambled tofu, broccoli and grilled tomatoes make for a healthy and colourful start to the day or try their coconut yogurt with vegan granola and fresh berries. Bottomless mimosas or prosecco are standard…

Where to get great vegetarian and vegan lunches

There is a host of cafes and restaurants across Broadgate that have put vegetarian and vegan menus at the heart of what they do: try Island Poke for their Vegan Tofu bowls, Nyokee for gnocchi made fresh that day from seasonal veg; Hop Vietnamese for Vegan Chicken Hop boxes (plant-based protein in our caramel marinade with vegan Nuoc Cham dressing, jasmine rice, crunchy Viet salad, crispy shallots, coriander and sliced chillies); Farmer J’s field trays and Pret’s new veggie menu (the Humour and Chipotle wrap is our new lunchtime addiction with sliced red peppers, crunchy carrot and mooli slaw, pickled cabbage and carrot and baby leaf spinach). Plus, Pod’s array of wraps and salads will never let a good veggie down.

A great Japanese vegetarian restaurant

Shoryu Ramen’s veggie ramen has the name White Natural and comes with miso, konbu and shiitake broth, atsuage fried tofu, kikurage mushrooms, menma bamboo shoots, spring onion and nori seaweed while the Spicy Vegetarian comes with added spicy miso sauce, tender broccoli and garlic mayu.

Vegan wines and veggie food

BloomsYard in 100 Liverpool Street serves up food to the flexible working space Storey but are also on-hand to welcome you into their light-filled space of comfy sofas and handy tables. Serving coffee and herbal teas throughout the day, in the evening, it’s the perfect spot to try out their hand-picked selection of vegan wines served with plates of “picky things”.

The best veggie pizzas

With daily specials and a constant nod to veggie dining, Franco Manca offer vegan cheese on all their pizzas - their long-standing go-tos include the number 3 (roasted courgettes, ricotta and roasted baby plum tomatoes) plus their sorbets and wines are vegan friendly. Over on Bishopsgate, Tank & Paddle’s Margherita can be transformed into a vegan version while veggie Truffle Mushroom pizza comes with Paris brown mushrooms, spring onions, coriander and truffle-infused oil. Eataly also has fresh counters packed with homemade veggie pasta, breads, pizza and panini while their huge market is filled to the brim with Italian-sourced products to bring veggie eating home.

Veggie and vegan menus at East London pubs and wine bars

Broadgate’s welcoming old-school wine bars and pubs are also the perfect places to head with a mixed group of friends who need a varied menu: The Tapster serves up vegan burgers and sausages (complete with olive oil and garlic mash with gravy) and a huge selection of vegan wines by the glass while The White Horse has a brilliant menu of wild garlic risotto (peas, broad beans, vegan feta and pearl barley), the Ultimate Plant-Based burger (cheese, caramelised onion, lettuce, ketchup, mayo, pickles and skinny fries) and Heritage tomato caprese salad (Buffalo mozzarella and wild garlic pesto).

The best places for veggie sharing plates

Head to Comptoir Libanais on Broadgate Circle for a feast of Lebanese food featuring plates of baba ganoush, hummus, aubergine terrine and salads served with vegan falafel (chickpea patties, coriander, parsley, peppers, pickled turnips served with tahini sauce) and burgers (grilled halloumi, aubergine in coriander marinade, garlic, tomato, pickled cucumber and sesame seeds). With a welcoming, colourful vibe and outdoor terrace, it’s the perfect lunch spot.

Over in Finsbury Avenue Square, Anatolian restaurant Baraka will fill your table with dips, bowls of good stuff and grains with veggie mains such as Hellim and Aubergine Gratin (pan-cooked aubergines and halloumi layers, fresh garlic tomato sauce, basil pesto, rocket and rice) that’ll leave you dreaming about it for days afterwards while the Grilled artichoke hearts, rocket and almonds salad is a delight.

Finish with one of their truly incredible gins.
